NeuStar, Inc. (NYSE: NSR) announced today at the 3GSM World Congress that 3 Italia, the mobile media company of the Hutchison Whampoa Group and the European leader in Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) technology with over 6.8 million customers as of August 2006, has selected NeuStar’s Next Generation Messaging Services for mobile instant messaging (IM) in Italy. NeuStar’s IMSC (IM Service Centre) and MMG (Mobile Messaging Gateway) will allow 3 Italia subscribers to see whether their Windows Live Messenger and 3 Italia IM “buddies” are online, and to communicate with them in real time.
Windows Live Messenger members will experience a similar look and feel to Messenger on their video phones, and will be able to chat with other Windows Live Messenger members anytime, anywhere through the NeuStar MMG. 3 Italia subscribers also will be able to enjoy a seamless advanced SMS experience with real-time presence-enabled messaging using 3 Italia’s own IM service through the NeuStar IMSC.
Mobile IM is widely seen as the platform for next generation messaging services due to its ability to provide IP-based presence information. Enabling subscribers to chat with both Windows Live Messenger and “own-community” buddies gives them the freedom to remain connected to the community of their choice. This builds the brand further, and strengthens the operator’s competitive and innovative offering to new subscribers.
